Today I am repairing an infected laptop for a customer. It had all sorts of windows popping up and finally it looked like it may never boot again.
So far I have pulled out 18 infections – serious ones too!
This laptop seems to have become infected via their email connection – though I can’t be 100% sure – they just want it fixed.
However I am suspicious – they have two email accounts
- one connected to their server which I built and maintain and
- one connected to a very large ISP.
There is one infected email in the inbox from the ISP email account. It’s one of those infections that pulls in tons of other infections. Hmm
However all their documents and photos are safely backed up – you know where – SafeOffSite – I use it for repair work.

After experiencing a hard disk failure, I had purchased and installed 2 new replacement drives. I built my computer up and set the data to be restored and went to bed – confident that by morning I would have a fully functioning repaired computer.
In the morning SOS had restored all my data and was looking great. I then noticed that one of the 2 drives had failed through the night.
Much fiddling with the failed drive revealed – yes it was dead. I arranged for a replacement – which is still coming.
That night my computer seemed to be in good working condition although it seemed to pause every now and then. Just in case I created a completely new SOS backup on the new secondary backup server and went to bed.
Well to cut a long story short – it’s a couple of days later and the second replacement drive is now dead. I can’t believe my eyes – but I do have a good back up. Once again SOS saves my butt. New replacement drives arrive in a couple of days.
I really would like to get back to productive work. PS it’s not the computer – I am using another pair of disks to run it and type this email.
The new secondary backup server is under construction today,
As I write this – I am waiting for disks to format. This will backup the main backup server, in place of the temporary external caddy system I have been using during our office move, infrastructure rebuild.
This wasn’t prompted by the total failure of my main workstation – see earlier post. – this was planned – The server hardware – arrived in only 3 days ago.
